In America, Walmart was able to crush the local shops because of the distance. People have to travel long distance for buying things. They used to stock things because of the travel. So they found that instead of travelling different places to buy things, they were able to go to walmart or other big super stores to buy which crushed the local stores. But this is not the case in India. The distance is not big, but the loyalty is big.

Does this mean the end of local mom & pop stores in India?

I would say no.,

There were many grocery retail chains that were opened in India (Spencers retail, Subiksha, Heritage, More, Bigbazaar etc), but still Mom & Pop stores are there.

Further, These local stores are also now tech friendly and accept #paytm #upi and other modes of #payment. They are also able to send delivery boys even for smaller #items.

Also can water is a big business in #India. Mostly these small local retail stores deliver the water cans. #amazon or #flipkart cant control this segment.

While these small grocery stores deliver water cans, they develop a bond and trust with the consumers. Because, they directly come to our house and #deliver the water cans.

Mostly people will have trust on these retailers. This loyalty will make them to regularly buy from these stores, unless ofcourse – companies like #amazon or #flipkart open up their freebie / offer model. Till they offer freebies customers may buy from them and still continue buying immediate need items from these small time grocery stores.

But once the #freebie model is over and these companies meet cash crunch, they will automatically shut their shops and people will again move to their local grocery shops for buying grocery.

The funny thing is, next or near to every retail units of these big companies, there will be one or more local grocery shop doing business happily.
